Char Gharey is an inclusive brand that represents our legume products harvested by committed women from rural lowlands of Ramechhap using climate smart tools and technologies. On every step of production, harvesting and marketing, our women-led enterprises of Ramechhap are supported by Co-producing a shock-resilient business ecosystem (CREW) project in collaboration with Aria Solutions, NIMS College, SIAS and HBTL and in support of IDRC, Canada.
After the initial shock of COVID-19 created a setback on economy as well as market for legume farmers, the women of Ramechhap rose up and beyond by taking leadership roles in legume production. The coordination of these like-minded motivated women with Sagarmatha Cooperative and Aria Solutions aimed for development of green marketing through its sustainable agricultural practices. We are contributing to shift the role of women in agriculture by creating financially sustainable ad shock-resilient agriculture-based enterprises.
Our story started out as a story of resilience of local farmers of Ramechhap to not cave in to the challenging situation of global pandemic that harshly impacted their livelihood. As the pandemic started to unfold, the market conditions started to worsen and became less stable for earning livable income through agriculture. The double burden of the pandemic and climate change particularly made it difficult for women of rural villages of Ramechhap. This was fueled even more by the added discriminatory gendered practices experienced by them.
